Enne Besuch em Zoo – A day at the Zoo

Sidney ist eine tolle Stadt. Leider sind 2 einhalb Tage einfach zu kurz. Da muss man sich Prioritäten setzen. Wir sind den Empfehlungen von unseren Freunden als auch von unseren australischen Partnern gefolgt und haben heute den Taronga Zoo besucht. Er liegt auf der anderen Seite der Bucht und man fährt mit einer Fähre dorthin. Die Fähren legen ab am Circular Quay, etwa 10 Minuten Fussweg von unserem Hotel. Die Fahrt nach Taronga dauert etwa 15 Minuten und wir sind mit der Seilbahn zum Zooeingang gefahren, der auf einem Berg liegt. Traumhafte Aussicht auf die Oper von Sydney unter anderem vom Giraffengehege ist garantiert.

Unsere besonderes Interesse galt den australischen Tieren, die wir noch nicht gesehen haben: dem Schnabeltier (Platypus) und dem tasmanischen Teufel. Da der Teufel fast ausgestorben ist und die überlebenden Tiere in Tasmanien von einer Art Mundkrebs befallen sind, ist das Zuchtprogramm im Taronga Zoo besonders wichtig.

Nach etwas über 4 Stunden im Zoo sind wir wieder mit der Fähre zurückgefahren. Unser Abendessen haben wir in einem italienischen Restaurant am Circular Quay gehabt, welches von einem griechischen Ehepaar betrieben wird. Die deutsche Kellnerin Sonja, die dort als Backpackerin Geld verdient war das Tüpfelchen auf dem i eines sehr schönen Tages.

Noch einen Tag in OZ.

Sydney is a great and wonderful city. Unfortunately 2 days are not enough to discover the city, hence priorities must be set. We followed the recommendations of our friends and visited the Taronga Zoo which is located at the Sydney Bay opposite to the Opera House. A ferry brings you there leaving from the Circular Quay Wharfs. The ride is only 15 minutes. From the Taronga Zoo Wharf we tool the Cable Car up on the hill where the Zoo entry is. We've been there about 4 hours admiring the Australian wildlife that we hadn't seen yet: The Platypus and the Tasmanian Devil. The Zoo has a special breeding program to help saving the Tasmanian Devil for extinction. The animals still living in Tasmania suffer from the Devil Facial Tumour Disease. We also saw the Platypus but it was too dark to make a good photo.

We took the ferry back to Circular Quay and had dinner at an Italian restaurant owned by a Greek couple and we were served by a lovely German waitress named Sonja. She's here for a year as a backpacker. One more day here in OZ.

Nachmittag ab 13 Uhr: Treffen mit unseren australischen Kunden und unserem Distributor CCA Software. Ich habe die neue Version unserer Software zur Datensynchronisation in heterogenen Umgebungen vorgestellt und Implementationsbeispiele von verschiedener Kunden. Die Reaktion war sehr positiv.

The day in short: 9 am Full Breakfast (take something from everything). After that a walk to Darling Harbour (Sorry Nadine, we didn't find ENIGMA, BUT THE BOAT IS STILL THERE).

Afternoon 1pm: Meeting with our Australian customers and with our distributor CCA Software. I gave presentations about the new version of our data synchronization product tcVISION and presented special implementation examples of some of our customers. The reaction of our Australian customers was very positive.

Kurzer Rückblick: Am Sonntag, dem 2. November waren wir bei den Nachbarn von Henry und Jeanette zu Besuch. Kaffe und Kuchen unter Jacaranda Bäumen.

In der Nacht zum Montag kam endlich der ersehnte Regen. Genau zum richtigen Zeitpunkt. Die Wassertanks wurden wieder aufgefüllt und wir hatten am letzten Tag eh nichts mehr Grosses vor. Rumhängen, waschen und Abends haben wir mit Jeanette SKIP-BO gespielt.

Heute morgen ging es dann um 8 Uhr zum Flughafen nach Maroochydore, dem Sunshine Coast Airport. Ewald ist nach Canberra geflogen, von wo er mit seinem Bruder wieder nach Tonimbuk fährt. Viel Arbeit wartet auf ihn, da er die letzten 5 Wochen auf seiner Farm nichts hat tun können.

Nach 82 Minuten Flug mit VA 478 sind wir in Sydney gelandet und haben uns ein Taxi zum Hotel genommen. Wir wohnen bis Samstag im The Menzies, ca. 7 Minuten von Darling Harbour und 10 Minuten von der Sydney Opera und der Harbour Bridge entfernt. Nach einer Inspektion des Konferenzraumes für das morgige Meeting sind wir heute nachmittag auch dort hingegangen. Sydney war ausser Rand und Band. Parties überall, denn heute war ein nationales Ereignis: der Melbourne Cup, das grösste und wichtigste Pferderennen in Australien. In Victoria ist der erste Dienstag im November ein Feiertag, dem Tag des Pferderennens. Die Männer bevölkerten im Anzug die Bars, Restaurants und Cafés und die Damen trugen ihre „Fascinator“ zur Schau. Der Hafenrand an der Macquarie Street war eine einzige Partymeile.

Short view back to Sunday: We had coffee and cake at the neighbors of Henry and Jeanette under blooming Jacaranda trees.

The rain came in the night to Monday. Finally the water tanks could fill up again. No worries to us because it was Bye Bye day and we had nothing more on our bucket list.

Around 8 this morning we drove to Sunshine Coast Airport, Maroochydore. Ernie flew to Canberra where he was picked up by his brother and drove back all the way to Tonimbuk. Lots of work is awaiting him, because he did not maintain his farm for the last 5 weeks.

After 832 minutes we landed in Sydney and took a taxi to our hotel The Menzies which is about 7 minutes away from Darling Harbour and 10 minutes from the Opera House. After an inspection of the conference room for tomorrow's meeting Gila and I walked to the Opera House. All Sydney was a party because people celebrated a national event: The Melbourne Cup. This is the most important horse race of Australia which takes place on first Tuesday in November. In the state of Victoria this day even is a public holiday. Males were wearing suits and the ladies a „Fascinator“. Macquarie Street was one huge party.

Irgendwie verfliegt die Zeit schnell hier in Down Under. Keine Zeit fürs Blog. Jetzt ist der 2. November 2014, es ist kurz vor 9 Uhr. Wir hatten unser Frühstück mit Speck, Spiegeleiern, die auf dem WEBER gebraten wurden. Es sah nach Regen aus heute morgen kurz nach 5. Die Sonne ging hinter einer grossen Wolkenwand auf.

Unser Gastgeber Henry hofft auf Regen. Er hat 5 Tanks auf seinem Grundstück. So haben wir das bisher überall gesehen, ausser in Canberra und in Cairns. Wasser ist ein wichtiges Element hier und man sorgsam damit um.

Doch der Reihe nach. Am 31.10 hatten wir ein BBQ auf der Terrasse. Die beiden Nachbarn John und Astrid waren auch hier. Sie haben 26 Jahre in Italien gelebt und sind vor einem Jahr nach Queensland gezogen. Tolles Haus mit unendlich Land. Wie fast überall hier. Auch das Land von Henry und Jeanette ist für unsere Verhältnisse sehr, sehr gross.

Great T-bone steaks

Am 1. November sind wir bei wiederum 31 Grad in den Kondalilla National Park gefahren, der nur ca. 20 Minuten von hier entfernt ist. Hier gibt es einen grossen Wasserfall, der allerdings nur im Winter (Juni, Juli, August) nach der Regenzeit seine Wassermassen zu Tal bringt. Etwas oberhalb des Falles gibt es einen idyllischen kleinen See, in dem man schwimmen kann. Da gestern Samstag war, waren einigen Familien mit ihren Kinder zu Besuch. Wie fast überall auf unserer Reise haben wir auch hier 2 junge Deutsche getroffen, die nach ihrem Abitur 7 Monate hier sind und urlauben und auf Farmen arbeiten.

Lunch gab es in Montville. "The Edge" bietet eine grandiosen Blick auf die Sunshine Coast und das Hinterland.

Abends sind wir mit dem Sohn von Henry und Jeanette und seiner kleinen Familie nach Noosa zum Essen gefahren. Direkt am Noosa River, der unmittelbar in den Pazifik mündet. Hier liegt das Boathouse, ein „floating restaurant“ und für Gila und mich gab es jetzt die Gelegenheit, einmal einheimischen, frischen Fisch zu essen: Barrimundi. Eine wirkliche Delikatesse.

Gegen Mittag besuchen wir John und Astrid auf einen Kaffee und Kuchen. Morgen ist unser letzter Tag hier. Es geht noch für vier Tage nach Sydney und dann wieder ab ins kalte Deutschland.

Wenn ich das schreibe, ist schon etwas Traurigkeit dabei. Wir haben das Land und die Menschen kennengelernt. Nicht vom vom Hotel aus (Ausnahme Cairns und Sidney) sondern inmitten der freundlichen Menschen auf dem Land.

Today I got up at 5pm to watch another great sunrise. The view was spectacular because the sun was hidden behind clouds. Henry is hoping to get some rain to fill his water tanks. He's got five of them on his land.

On Halloween (nobody's crazy here like in the States and Germany) the next neighbor Astrid and John came to visit us and we had BBQ together.

Yesterday we did another tour to Kondalilla National Park which is only a 20 minute drive from here. The park is known for his water falls. But at this time of the year there's only little water. The falls are great during Winter (June, July) right after the rain season. Above the falls there is a romantic little swimming pond. Because it was Saturday some families with kids were bathing here. And we met another 2 young Germans who are on a backpacking trip though Australia for 7 months. This becomes very popular. Right after the graduation from school.

We had dinner at a floating restaurant in Noosa with Jeanette and Henry's son and his little family. Gila and I could enjoy a local fish: the Barramundi. What a great delicacy it was.

This afternoon we'll visit John and Astrid for coffee and cake. Tomorrow is Bye Bye day here in Montville. Our trip surely comes to an end. We feel very sad about it because we sort of fell in love with this beautiful country and the friendly people here.
