Asien und Down Under – Mit Polizeibegleitung durch den Moloch Manila

Eine Ankunft in Amnila ist immer etwas besonderes. Da fast alle Crew Mitglieder Filippinos und in Manila ein Teil der Crew ausgewechselt wird, sind immer viele Angehörige an der Pier, die ihre an Bord befindlichen Familienmitglieder besuchen wollen.

Die Offiziere der MS Artania haben dazu auf der Pier ein Willkommensbuffet errichten lassen und Hunderte sind gekommen und haben die Pier und das Schiff bevölkert.

Nach dem Mittagessen haben wir eine Stadtrundfahrt gemacht, die insgesamt 5 Stunden gedauert hat. Da Manila dafür bekannt ist auf seinen Strassen einen permanenten Stau zu verzeichnen, sind unsere 3 Busse von einer Polizeieskorte auf Motorrädern begleitet worden. Es war eine aufregende Fahrt über rote Ampeln, Einbahnstraßen in falscher Richtung und einmal haben die Busse auf einer 6-spurigen Strasse gewendet, da die Polizei eine andere Strecke einschlagen wollte.

Die Stopps auf dieser Chaosfahrt waren: das Denkmal des Nationalhelden Rizal, das sündhaft teure Reichen- und Finanzviertel Makati, der größte amerikanische Soldatenfriedhof ausserhalb der USA, ein chinesischer Friedhof mit hausgroßen Mausoleen, einigen Kirchen und Fort Santiago.

Was wir sehen konnten war auch unerträgliche Armut. Frauen und Kinder, die auf der Strasse unter einem Regenschirm lebten. Reich und Arm ganz nah beieinander. Selbst auf dem chinesischen Friedhof leben Menschen, die ansonsten im Moloch Manila mit seinen mehr als 12 Millionen Einwohnern keinen Platz zum Leben finden.

Asia and Down Under – With the help of the police mastering the moloch Manila

Nearly all of the Crew members are Filippinos, hence Manila is the place where part of the crew changes and the other part gets visits from family members.

A large welcome buffet was organized by the officers of MS Artania for the visiting families.

We hd booked an excursion to certain places of interest in Manila and the excursion was planned to be 5 hours. Because of the terrible traffic situation in Manila, 6 police officers on motor bikes escorted the three buses and made sure that we always had free way by ignoring red lights, taking the wrong direction in one way streets, they even stopped the traffic on a 6 lane highway so that the buses could make a U-turn.

The points of interest were the Rizal park, named after the national hero of the Philippines, the largest American cemetery outside the US, a fascinating Chinese cemetery, several churches and Fort Santiago.

It was very upsetting to see a lot of people live on the streets, because they cannot afford a flat. There were even people living on the Chinese cemetery. Extremely rich and extremely poor live in Manila.
