Back Home – Memories of Singapore – Busy, Hot and Brauhaus

Wir sind wieder gesund und munter, wenn auch etwas müde, in Reinbek angekommen. Flug SQ328 ist um 23.50 Uhr in Singapur losgeflogen. Nach 12 Stunden waren wir in München um 2 Stunden später mit einer Lufthansa Maschine nach Hamburg zu fliegen. Jetzt simmer widder da. Auch nicht schlecht. Aber die Planung für die nächste Australienreise kann jetzt beginnen. Alex, Gilas Tochter und unsere Enkelin Ella hat uns zur Begrüssung einen Willkommensgruss im Flur angebracht.

Doch was ist in den letzten beiden Tagen passiert:

Gegen Mitternacht sind wir am 8.11. abends im Orchard Hotel, Singapur, angekommen. Die Singapur Airlines SQ222 von Sydney musste bei starkem Regen und einem tropischen Gewitter die Landung 2 mal versuchen. Beim ersten Versuch waren die Winde zu stark, die Maschine wurde kräftig durchgeschüttelt und der Pilot brach die Landung ab und startete durch. Regenzeit in den Tropen. Im Orchard Hotel war auch nach Mitternacht Party pur. Menschen aller Nationen warn zugegen. Wir haben nach dem langen Flug noch ein Bier und einen Kaffe in der Bar zu uns genommen und sind dann zu Bett.

Heute, am 9.11., galt es, die Zeit bis zum Abflug um 23.50 totzuschlagen, bei knapp 30 Grad und 90 % Luftfeuchtigkeit. Wir sind zur Marina Square Mall gefahren und haben dort Window Shopping gemacht. Ich wollte unbedingt ein Foto vom Marina Bay Sands Hotel machen, dem Hotel mit dem Schiff und dem Pool auf dem Dach. Die Strafe kam sofort für mich. Zu heiß, zu schwül. Ich habe mein Hemd durchgeschwitzt und musste danach eine ganze Stunde in der Mall bei angenehmen 21 Grad regenerieren. Gila hat sich die Mall angeschaut und dabei ein Paulaner Brauhaus in der Nähe gefunden. Man spürt, wir sind bald wieder zu Hause und nehmen leibgewordenen Gewohnheiten wieder an.

Wirr sind jetzt wieder im Hotel und werden gegen 18 Uhr zum Flughafen fahren. 13 Stunden sind es bis München. Dort haben wir 2 Stunden Aufenthalt bis die Lufthansa uns nach Hamburg bringt.

It was midnight when we arrived at the Orchard Hotel in Singapore. Singapore Airlines SQ222 from Sydney took a double try for landing because Singapore had a Thunderstorm, lots of rain and strong winds. The Orchard Hotel is meeting point for people all over the globe. Even after midnight the party was on. We had a beer and a coffee at the bar and then we retired to our room.

Today we had to kill time because our flight leaves at 11.10 pm. 30 degrees Centigrade and nearly 90 % humidity! We took a taxi to Marina Square Mall to do some (window) shopping. The famous Marina Bay Sands Hotel is close by and I wanted to take a photo of the ship with the pool on top of the hotel. What a bad idea because the heat hit me and I started to sweat and had to go back to the Mall. It took me about an hour to recover. Gila went shopping and she found a Paulaner Brauhaus next to the shopping Mall. Its getting closer to home and old habits come back!

We are now at the hotel and will take a cab to the airport around 6 pm. 13 hours flight to Munich ahead of us, a 2 hour stay at Munich Airport and Lufthansa will take us to Hamburg.

Abschied nehmen – Bye Bye Australia

Letzter Tag heute. Morgen geht der Flieger zwar erst gegen 16 Uhr nach Singapur und wir haben noch den Vormittag zu unserer Verfügung, aber wir werden nicht mehr viel unternehmen.

Heute wird Abschied genommen. Abschied mit einer Fahrt zu einer schönsten Strände im Norden von Sydney: Manly.

Wie bereits gestern haben wir die Fähre genommen. Diesmal dauerte die Fahrt eine halbe Stunde. Manly hat uns an Cairns erinnert. Ähnliche Atmosphäre, bunt, pulsierend. The Corso heisst die Shopping Strasse welche direkt zur Surf Coast geht.

Wir haben hier am Strand die Seele baumeln lassen und uns im Bavarian Bier Cafe an der Manly Wharf wieder auf heimische Getränke vorbereitet. Nach 7 Wochen VB (Victoria Bitter), Carlton Draught, XXXX Gold, Little Creatures und StoneWood schmeckte das Paulaner Hefeweizen wieder sehr gut.

Wie gesagt, morgen geht es nach Singapur. Wir bleiben dort einen Tag und am Sonntag geht’s es via München nach Hamburg, wo wir wahrscheinlich vom Streik der Bahn getroffen werden. Gott sei Dank hat Gilas Tochter ein Taxi für uns reserviert, dass uns am Flughafen abholen wird.

Last day today. Tomorrow we leave around 4pm so we still have a half day for us, but we will take it easy, not much more on our to-do list.

Today we say Bye Bye with a ferry ride to one of the nicest beaches of northern Sydney: Manly.

Like yesterday we too the ferry. The ride was about 30 minutes. Manly reminded us of Cairns. Similar atmosphere, very colorful and vibrant. The shopping road that goes directly to the Surf Coast Beach is called The Corso.

We relaxed some time at the beach promenade and enjoyed a good Paulaner dark Hefeweizen at the Bavarian Bier Cafe at the Manly Wharf. Its time to get used to German beer after 7 weeks with VB (Victoria Bitter), Carlton Draught, XXXX Gold, Little Creatures and StoneWood!

As I said tomorrow we head for Singapore where we stay one day and then off we go to Hamburg via Munich. The German Railway is on strike and we will probably be affected by it. Thanks God Gila's daughter has made a taxi reservation for us and we'll be picked up at Hamburg airport.

Enne Besuch em Zoo – A day at the Zoo

Sidney ist eine tolle Stadt. Leider sind 2 einhalb Tage einfach zu kurz. Da muss man sich Prioritäten setzen. Wir sind den Empfehlungen von unseren Freunden als auch von unseren australischen Partnern gefolgt und haben heute den Taronga Zoo besucht. Er liegt auf der anderen Seite der Bucht und man fährt mit einer Fähre dorthin. Die Fähren legen ab am Circular Quay, etwa 10 Minuten Fussweg von unserem Hotel. Die Fahrt nach Taronga dauert etwa 15 Minuten und wir sind mit der Seilbahn zum Zooeingang gefahren, der auf einem Berg liegt. Traumhafte Aussicht auf die Oper von Sydney unter anderem vom Giraffengehege ist garantiert.

Unsere besonderes Interesse galt den australischen Tieren, die wir noch nicht gesehen haben: dem Schnabeltier (Platypus) und dem tasmanischen Teufel. Da der Teufel fast ausgestorben ist und die überlebenden Tiere in Tasmanien von einer Art Mundkrebs befallen sind, ist das Zuchtprogramm im Taronga Zoo besonders wichtig.

Nach etwas über 4 Stunden im Zoo sind wir wieder mit der Fähre zurückgefahren. Unser Abendessen haben wir in einem italienischen Restaurant am Circular Quay gehabt, welches von einem griechischen Ehepaar betrieben wird. Die deutsche Kellnerin Sonja, die dort als Backpackerin Geld verdient war das Tüpfelchen auf dem i eines sehr schönen Tages.

Noch einen Tag in OZ.

Sydney is a great and wonderful city. Unfortunately 2 days are not enough to discover the city, hence priorities must be set. We followed the recommendations of our friends and visited the Taronga Zoo which is located at the Sydney Bay opposite to the Opera House. A ferry brings you there leaving from the Circular Quay Wharfs. The ride is only 15 minutes. From the Taronga Zoo Wharf we tool the Cable Car up on the hill where the Zoo entry is. We've been there about 4 hours admiring the Australian wildlife that we hadn't seen yet: The Platypus and the Tasmanian Devil. The Zoo has a special breeding program to help saving the Tasmanian Devil for extinction. The animals still living in Tasmania suffer from the Devil Facial Tumour Disease. We also saw the Platypus but it was too dark to make a good photo.

We took the ferry back to Circular Quay and had dinner at an Italian restaurant owned by a Greek couple and we were served by a lovely German waitress named Sonja. She's here for a year as a backpacker. One more day here in OZ.
